Shopify Mobile Speed: A Practical LCP Diagnosis Guide
A slow mobile storefront needs a diagnosis before it needs another optimization app. Start with a specific page, identify what delays the main content, and compare changes under the same conditions.
Start with the page a customer actually uses
Choose a homepage, a representative product with normal media and variants, and a collection with realistic filters and image counts. Record the exact URLs, theme version, enabled app embeds and test date. Avoid comparing a simple homepage with a heavily customized product page and calling the difference an improvement.
Run more than one baseline test. Keep the device, connection settings, test tool and page state consistent, then retain the individual results as well as the median. Record whether a cookie banner, sale popup or personalization changed what appeared. These details make a before-and-after comparison useful when another developer needs to reproduce it.
Separate field data from your diagnostic test
PageSpeed Insights combines controlled Lighthouse tests with real-user information when enough data is available. Its field data covers a trailing 28-day period. Check whether the report describes the specific URL or the whole origin: an origin result is not a measurement of every product page. A new theme change will not instantly replace that historical data. Read Google’s explanation of PageSpeed Insights.
Find the actual LCP element
Largest Contentful Paint measures when the largest eligible image or text block in the initial viewport becomes visible. It might be a hero image, product photo or heading. Identify that element in Chrome’s Performance panel rather than assuming every large image is responsible. The useful question is where its time is spent: waiting for the document, waiting to start the resource request, downloading it, or waiting to render it. Google’s LCP diagnosis guide explains these stages.
Illustrative diagnosis: a product photo appears late
This is a hypothetical investigation, not a measured client result. Imagine the first product image finishes downloading promptly but stays hidden until a gallery script runs. Compressing it again may change very little. The next experiment is to make the first frame visible before the interactive gallery initializes, while preserving zoom, swiping and variant image selection.
If the download itself is the delay, inspect the image dimensions and format instead. If its request starts late, check how the theme makes it discoverable. Each observation suggests a different experiment.
Make the smallest change supported by the evidence
Shopify recommends responsive image delivery and avoiding lazy loading for above-the-fold images. A likely LCP image should not wait for a scroll-triggered loader. Check theme-generated image widths, the rendered size, and whether the image is available in the initial markup. Preserve image dimensions to reduce shifting. These decisions should follow the actual layout; preloading every image creates competition rather than a useful priority. See Shopify’s theme performance guidance.
On a collection page, inspect the first visible row separately from products far below it. On a product page, distinguish the first photo from secondary media. Record the change you expect to help before testing it: for example, “make the initial gallery frame visible without waiting for the enhancement script.” This makes an unsuccessful experiment informative instead of an unexplained score fluctuation.
Test shopping behavior before publishing
- Open the mobile menu and search, including keyboard interaction.
- Switch product variants and check that images, price and availability remain correct.
- Use collection filters, sorting and pagination.
- Add a product to the cart and check quantities, discounts and the route to checkout.
- Check image quality, zoom, layout movement and interactions on desktop as well as mobile.
Keep the change log beside the measurements. Note any app dependency you could not change and distinguish laboratory improvements from field data that still needs time to update. A higher score alone does not establish improved sales.
