A supplier finishes a project, but their account still has broad website access. Another employee leaves and takes the only working integration connection with them. Access review needs to distinguish people from business dependencies.

Inventory the relevant access

Review website users, hosting, domain management and external service permissions. Identify the legitimate owner and purpose of each account. Avoid using a single shared administrator login as the record of who performed work.

Plan removal in the right order

Transfer business-owned responsibilities and verify recovery contacts before revoking access that supports essential workflows. Where provider delegation is available, use the supported arrangement. Do not publish credentials in a handover document to make offboarding easier.

  • Remove privileges that are no longer required.
  • Review API keys and application passwords separately.
  • Rotate affected secrets under an agreed procedure.
  • Check connected workflows after changes.
  • Record who approved and completed the review.

Test continuity

For an authorised supplier transition, confirm that the business can still manage renewals, receive enquiries and operate integrations. A successful login by the new maintainer does not prove every external dependency has transferred correctly.

Keep reviews routine

Access can accumulate during ordinary support work. Review it after project completion and responsibility changes, not only after an incident. The goal is intentional, accountable access and a recoverable business setup, not an unrealistic claim that permission cleanup eliminates every security risk.
