  4. Keep the relationship supportable

A finished website is difficult to manage if the domain, hosting and essential plugins belong to accounts the business cannot access. Ownership should be discussed before the final design review.

List the assets and accounts

Identify the domain registrar, host, website administration, analytics, payment gateway and paid software. Record the legitimate account owner and authorised administrator. Use secure access-sharing or transfer methods supported by the provider.

Define what is being delivered

Ask for relevant source files, design assets, documentation and a record of custom functionality. Explain any licence that remains supplier-managed or requires renewal. A website export may not include every external integration or media right.

  • Confirm business-controlled recovery contacts.
  • Retain configuration and deployment instructions.
  • Record third-party subscription responsibilities.
  • Remove unnecessary supplier access after agreed handover.
  • Agree on covered post-launch support and extra work.

Perform an operator walkthrough

Have an authorised staff member make a safe content edit, locate a support request and identify the renewal information. Review the process for a lost-access incident without publishing secrets in a shared checklist.

Keep the relationship supportable

A good handover helps the business continue with the same developer or choose another maintainer later. It is not a promise of unlimited future changes. Clear ownership, documentation and support scope make the website a manageable business asset rather than a dependency nobody can explain.
