  1. Identify the installed experience
  2. Audit custom behaviour before changing appearance
  3. Use a small proof of compatibility
  4. Document the decision

A code snippet changes one WooCommerce checkout but does nothing on another. The difference may be architectural rather than a broken snippet: the store may use a block-based checkout instead of the classic arrangement.

Identify the installed experience

Review the Cart and Checkout pages and the extensions that modify them. Check the current documentation for the exact gateway and field tools. Do not assume a theme preview represents the store's actual checkout.

Audit custom behaviour before changing appearance

List extra fields, validation, payment buttons, order metadata and package-selection logic. A visual redesign that drops a required integration is not an improvement. Use supported extension points and avoid editing distributed plugin files.

  • Confirm gateway compatibility with the checkout type.
  • Review any custom field or address logic.
  • Check mobile errors and keyboard access.
  • Test guest, account and returning-cart scenarios.
  • Verify the saved order, not just the page appearance.

Use a small proof of compatibility

In staging, test one representative product through the proposed checkout arrangement. Include an invalid input and a cancelled payment. Keep the existing working flow available until the replacement's relevant checks pass.

Document the decision

Record the chosen checkout type and why it suits the installed integrations. A familiar visual style is not a reason to replace working secure payment handling unnecessarily. Choose a supported arrangement the business can maintain as WooCommerce and its extensions change.
