When a PayPal button disappears, changing random gateway settings can make the investigation harder. Start by finding out whether the method is unavailable, the integration is not ready or the browser failed to load it.

Confirm the basic checkout state

Use a valid test product and a normal browser session. Check whether the cart is populated, the currency is supported by the actual merchant arrangement and the gateway is enabled. An empty cart reached by a stateless crawler is not proof that a normal browser purchase flow is broken.

Inspect the frontend carefully

Review console and network errors for the payment resources. Consider consent, script optimisation and the installed checkout type. Compare supported plugin settings with the exact checkout architecture instead of adding a second competing integration.

  • Record browser, page URL and safe error references.
  • Verify live versus sandbox mode.
  • Check merchant onboarding requirements.
  • Review plugin and checkout compatibility.
  • Test a targeted change with a rollback path.

Protect the order flow

Do not expose a client secret in page code or let a query parameter choose a payment total. Do not bypass payment verification to make a success page appear. A visible button is only one part of a secure, recorded transaction.

Finish with a scoped retest

After a fix, verify selection and display, then approval and completion in a permitted test environment. Retain limitations where testing access is missing. The useful outcome is a working supported checkout, not an unverified collection of payment badges.
