Your XML Sitemap Is a Discovery Aid, Not an Indexing Guarantee

Check sitemap URLs, canonical consistency and genuine modification dates. Keep important pages linked from the website as well.

A sitemap submission can succeed while an important service page remains absent from search. A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs; it does not require them to index or rank every page.

Inspect what is listed

Check that the sitemap opens publicly and includes the preferred URLs for important content. Review obsolete, redirected or deliberately excluded pages. The sitemap should agree with the site's actual indexing decisions rather than expose every database record indiscriminately.

Keep modification dates meaningful

A last-modified value should reflect a relevant content change. Rewriting dates daily without changing the page does not give visitors better information. Coordinate the SEO plugin's output with genuine editorial updates.

  • Confirm the sitemap is valid XML and reachable.
  • Compare listed URLs with canonical destinations.
  • Check representative page responses and indexing rules.
  • Retain navigation and contextual internal links.
  • Review Search Console reports without assuming instant processing.

Follow a missing-page example

If a new guide is absent from the sitemap, check its publication state, assigned content type and SEO exclusions. If it is listed but not indexed, inspect the page itself and the reported reason. Repeatedly resubmitting the same sitemap does not diagnose either problem.

Maintain the publishing system

Verify sitemap behaviour after adding categories, changing templates or migrating SEO tools. Keep a simple record of which system generates it. A useful sitemap supports a well-structured website; it cannot compensate for inaccessible pages, confusing duplicates or content that does not help the intended reader.
