A report recommends text compression, but the host says compression is enabled. Both statements can be true for different resources or delivery paths. Verify what the browser receives instead of relying on a single dashboard switch.
Choose representative text responses
Inspect the HTML document and several important CSS and JavaScript files. Note their response headers, transferred size and uncompressed resource size where the tool provides them. Test the public route through the real CDN or proxy.
Do not use an already compressed photograph as the only test. Image format and resizing decisions are separate from transport compression of text.
Understand the two names
Gzip and Brotli are compression methods that compatible clients and servers can negotiate. The response’s content encoding indicates how that resource was delivered. Support and configuration depend on the server, CDN and request.
A smaller transfer can help loading, but the browser still has to parse and execute scripts. Compressing an unnecessary script does not make its runtime work disappear.
Find the owner of the configuration
Your host may control compression at the web server, while a CDN applies its own delivery behaviour. A WordPress plugin setting may not control either layer in the way its label suggests. Ask the provider which system is responsible.
- Check HTML and static text assets separately.
- Review exclusions and the conditions of the test request.
- Confirm that compressed variants are served appropriately to clients.
- Keep normal error and fallback responses functional.
Do not copy web-server directives for a different platform into production. A supported host-level change is preferable to an untested configuration fragment.
Compare useful outcomes
Record the same resource before and after a change, using comparable request conditions. Check transferred bytes and successful decoding. A resource that becomes smaller but fails to load is not an improvement.
Also review where the resource sits in the loading path. Reducing an important stylesheet may matter more than compressing a file used long after the visitor completes the task. Avoid promising a universal percentage saving.
Keep privacy and dynamic behaviour intact
Transport compression does not justify sharing private responses through a public cache. Keep account, form and payment handling under the appropriate rules. When the provider changes cache or proxy settings at the same time, test those responsibilities separately.
Check forms, booking and checkout after relevant infrastructure changes. Use an authorised test process rather than making real charges or sending unsolicited test messages.
Know when another fix matters more
If the relevant responses are already compressed, investigate oversized content, late resource discovery, server delays or expensive browser work. Switching algorithms alone may be less valuable than removing a verified unnecessary download.
A professional assessment should show the observed delivery and the proposed change, with any hosting access or service cost clearly identified.
