WooCommerce Coupons: Make Restrictions Match the Promotion
Configure coupon eligibility, usage limits and customer messages around the actual offer. Test accepted and rejected baskets before promotion.

In this guide
A discount code works for one customer but fails for another, even though the advert appears to promise the same offer. The issue may be an unclear promotion or a mismatch between the copy and configured restrictions.
Write the offer in plain language
State the intended products, customer eligibility, dates and usage conditions. Then map those terms to the supported coupon controls. Avoid adding a restriction simply because it is available if nobody can explain its business purpose.
Test both acceptance and rejection
A coupon test is incomplete if it only confirms one successful discounted order. Check the baskets that should not qualify and whether the resulting message helps the customer understand why. Consider interactions with other offers under the actual configuration.
- Verify discount type and value.
- Check product and category restrictions.
- Review minimum-spend and usage-limit behaviour.
- Test expiry timing and timezone assumptions.
- Confirm the final order records the intended discount.
Review a campaign example
For a hypothetical promotion limited to a service package, an unrelated product should not receive the discount accidentally. A mixed basket should behave according to the published offer, not the assumptions of the person creating the advert.
Keep the promotion maintainable
Record the responsible staff member and when the code should be reviewed or disabled. Test changes in a permitted environment before announcing them widely. Clear restrictions and accurate checkout calculations are more useful than a code that appears attractive but creates disputes.
